HILTON HEAD, S.C.- The Newberry men's tennis team defeated Wilkes University 7-0 Friday afternoon after two rained out days in Hilton Head.
The Wolves (6-4, 1-0 South Atlantic Conference) started out hot, taking two out of three doubles matches.
Edison Ambarzumjan and
Enrico Haas defeated Mike Ellis and Larry Scartz, edging them by a score of 6-2. Lawerence Friedland and
Luca Kirchhoff picked up an important doubles victory to secure team points by defeating Colin Greenman and Matt Angara 6-2.
In singles action, Newberry was able to go undefeated. Nationally ranked (No.12)
Edison Ambarzumjan showed no mercy cruising by Mike Ellis with set scores of 6-0, 6-2. Lawerence Friedland took care of the Colonel's Larry Scartz winning the first set comfortably 6-0 and finished it off in the second with a score of 6-1. Brude Edmonds had a tight match with Alec Levin but was able to sneak by him in the third set. In the first set, Edmonds got the 6-4 set win. In the second set, Levin did not go away quietly as he took down Edmonds 6-0 forcing a third set. Edmonds kept his composure in a very close third set, defeating his opponent 10-8.
Both Newberry men's and women's teams will be facing Carson-Newman tomorrow at the Oakland Tennis Center. The conference action will commence at 2 p.m. for both sides.
