NEWBERRY – The Newberry softball team sweeps Erskine at home, as the Wolves walk-off in game two.
Game One (Newberry wins 9-5)
With runners on second and third, junior
McKenzie Barneycastle would single to the outfield to bring in the two runners. Sophomore
Reagan Glanz sliced a shot to right to plate across Barneycastle, three batters later. Newberry scored one final run on an RBI ground out by freshman
Tedi Nunn, to put the Wolves up 4-0 after the first.
Erskine got on the board in the third inning. Allison Neeley of the Flying Fleet found a pitch she like and sent it over the fence, in right center, for a two-run homerun.
The Wolves were able to get one of those runs back in the bottom half of third. An error by Erskine allowed Barneycastle to score to make it 5-2.
Eventually the Flying Fleet tied the game up 5-5, in the fourth. First Erskine's Shi Cane took the first pitch she saw over the fence for a solo homerun. Later in the inning Faith Belue hit a two-run jack herself, for their second homerun of the inning.
Newberry would re-take the lead on an RBI walk, with bases loaded in the sixth. Senior
Haley Simonds added on insurance runs, for the Wolves, by hitting a two RBI single to center. Glanz brought in the ninth run for Newberry on a sacrifice fly to left field.
Game Two (Newberry wins 8-0 {5 Inn.})
The Wolves scored the first run of the game in the first inning. Simonds was up to the plate, where Barneycastle stole third during the at-bat, with a runner standing at thirdbase. She then smacked a hit through the left side to bring her home.
That hit gave Simonds her 200th career RBI, for the most in Newberry softball history. The RBI also made Simonds the new all-time leader in career RBIs South Atlantic Conference history. She is the first player ever to reach 200 RBIs in both Newberry and SAC history.
The Wolves added their second run of the game on an RBI double by Barneycastle, to drive in fellow classmate
Paige Meyer.
Newberry increased their lead to 5-0 an inning later. First freshman
Kylee Barry smacked a single off the second baseman's glove to bring in one. A few batters later, Barneycastle drove in two more runs off a hit to the outfield.
The Wolves ended the game in walk-off fashion during the fifth. Sophomore
Victoria Eaton came up to the plate with runners on first and second. She took the count to full before sending the next pitch over the left field fence, for her first career homerun, to make it 8-0.
Newberry received a strong pitching performance by
Alyssa Ball. The junior threw a complete game shutout giving up three hits and struck out five batter, while only walking one.

The Wolves will be back in action on Saturday Mar. 14th when they return to conference play on the road against Anderson. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
