Newberry comes away with one win on the day after splitting with Francis Marion

Wolves score eight unanswered runs in game one

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Newberry softball team suffered their first loss of the season by splitting the doubleheader with Francis Marion.

Game One (Newberry wins 8-5)
Neither team scored a run until the fourth inning. Francis Marion were able to capitalize a couple of runs off a Wolves error that would have ended the inning. The error allowed the batter to be safe at first and the runner go from first to second. Danielle Karacson than stepped up to the plate and on a 2-2 count she doubled to left field. Two runs scored to give the Patriots a 2-0 lead.

In the top half of the fifth the Wolves had the bases loaded, off of two hits and an error, when senior McKenzie Barneycastle came up. One the first pitch she hit the ball to left field for a sacrifice fly and one run to score. Freshman Tedi Nunn tied the game up by doing the same thing as the previous batter but to right field to allow another run to score, after the runners advance one base on the Barneycastle fly ball.

Newberry took the lead in the sixth when the Wolves scored a total six runs in the inning. Junior Sydney Patterson scored the first run off an error by the Patriots. Freshman Mallena Wright drove home two more with a single and advance all the way to third off a throwing error by the Patriots centerfielder. Wright crossed the home plate one batter later once junior Paige Meyer got a hit. After a double by Barneycastle, Nunn drove in Meyer with a single up the middle. Newberry got their last run of the inning off a sacrifice bunt by senior Hayley Simonds to score Barneycastle.

Francis Marion got three runs back in the seventh when Carson Shannon doubled to drive in a run. Followed by Savana Rosson smacking a two-run homerun to make the score 8-5.

Once again this season senior Selice Daley pitched a complete game giving up three earned runs and striking out five Patriots along the way.

Game Two (Newberry fall 12-11)
In the second game of the day, Newberry got on the board first when Simonds singled down the right field line to bring in two runs. Francis Marion were able to tie it up in the bottom half of the inning. An error by the Wolves allowed the Patriots to score two unearned runs.

The Wolves re-took the lead in the second, where they plated two runs. A single by Meyer got junior Morgan Wagaman to come around. Frehsman Kylee Barry entered the game by pinch running for Meyer and then crossed the plate off a single by Barneycastle through the right side.

In the third, Wright flied out to left field but was deep enough to allow Patterson to score. Barneycastle forced another run in with a single through the left side. Newberry finished the top of the inning with three runs, after Wagaman scored on a pass ball. The Patriots got one of those runs back in the next half inning with a fielder's choice by Addie May.

Both teams than plated across one run in the fourth inning. Newberry's was off a double by sophomore Victoria Eaton and Francis Marion off a single by Janecia Hemingway.

The Wolves scored their final three runs of the game in the top half of the sixth. A hit by sophomore Julia Bomhardt allowed Simonds to score one run. Eaton smacked two more runs in with her second double of the game.

In the bottom half of the inning Francis Marion would come back from behind and score eight runs. The Patriots then took care of business in the top of the seventh to secure the win.
