BELMONT, N.C. – The Newberry Wolves men's soccer team defeats the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey with a 1-0 decision Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
It was not until the 81st minute when Newberry finally broke through the defense with a goal from senior forward
Daniel Reyes. Junior forward
Andrew Gallagher was able to win the ball at the top of box in Belmont Abbey's zone. He then played the ball to a streaking Paul down the right side. Running toward the goal,
Troy Paul make a tremendous cross to Reyes, who was coming from the left side, for the one timer from 10 yards out.
Newberry then attempted to play keep away to milk the clock away. That did not stop Belmont Abbey from a last minute attack where they were able to get as close as five yards out from the goal but could not get a shot off as time expired in the match.
It did not take long for
Tre Bonaparte, who had a goal and assist in the season opener, to make his mark into the match at the start of the match. Around five minutes in he took a shot on goal, but was saved by the Crusaders keeper. After that both teams exchanged shots, but Belmont Abbey maintained the early possession for the next 20 minutes.
The Wolves were able to intercept the ball at midfield, close to the 25th minute mark. Junior midfielder
Eric Brody was running up the field when he was fouled. With the free kick, Brody then lofted a pass into the box toward the goal to a teammate, but the Crusaders keeper stopped the potential attack by coming out and grab the ball out of the air. Two minutes later, Newberry was attempting to clear the ball out of their zone when the pass intercepted. This led to a two on one situation which was not a problem for freshman goalkeeper
Leroy Zeller, who made a great save to stop the threat.
Neither team would score heading into intermission. At the start of the second half, the Crusaders were able to create a couple of shots, none of which could break the defense. The Wolves came down the pitch ten minutes later with their own barrage of attacks. Both teams continued with strong defenses with neither side wanting to give up anything.
After the match, Head Coach
Bryce Cooper said that his team earned a "great win in some tough conditions today on the road in some very hot temps against a disciplined and organized team that had a good game plan. I'm really proud of the way we managed the game, dictated play and kept our focus to find a way to get the result."
The Wolves get ready to travel to Greenwood to take on rank #5 Lander Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
