MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 25 ranked Newberry softball team dropped both games in the doubleheader against Georgia College on Thursday evening at the Peeler Complex.
The Wolves drop to 17-5 overall after losing consecutive games for the first time this season while the Bobcats advance to 16-10.
Game One (No. 25 Newberry falls vs. Georgia College, 6-1)
Both the Wolves and Bobcats were held in a stalemate throughout the first four innings of the game as neither side could score.
Starting pitcher
Alyssa Ball showed her confidence early into the game after the Bobcats loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the first inning. Ball wound up striking out the next batter and forced a groundout to escape the inning without giving up a run.
A big fifth inning saw the Bobcats take a 3-0 lead after two homeruns.
Ashley Willis provided fantastic defense for the final two outs of the inning, however, making an incredible over the shoulder catch in right field as the Wolves moved on to the sixth inning.
The Wolves immediately started to rally in the next inning as
Chelsey Cunningham was granted a base after getting hit by a pitch.
Hannah Davis singled through the left side to give Newberry two runners on base with one out.
Reagan Glanz then took a walk to load the bases for the Wolves. However, the Bobcats would strikeout pinch-hitters
Maddie Miller and
Kailey Carpenter to escape the Wolves scoring threat.
Georgia College added three more runs to their lead in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-0 lead. With a sizable deficit the Wolves showed their resilience in the final inning.
Paige Meyer took a walk to lead off the inning. The Bobcats would record two outs as
Haley Simonds came up to bat.
Simonds doubled to center field, scoring Meyer in the process to give the Wolves one run. However, Cunningham grounded out in the next at bat to end the game as the Bobcats picked up the win.
Game Two (No. 25 Newberry falls vs. Georgia College 6-3)
Newberry's rally in the second game came up just short as the Bobcats were able to hold off the Wolves after scoring four runs in the third inning.
Simonds started the Wolves comeback in the sixth inning as she doubled to left center to score
Natalie Willis who was hit by a pitch in the previous at bat.
After recording the final two outs in the sixth, the Bobcats would then add two more runs to their total, pushing their lead to 6-1.
Down by five, Glanz would take a four-pitch walk to lead off the top of the seventh inning.
Abigail Valentine entered the game to pinch-hit where she hit a single past the second baseman to put two runners on for Newberry.
After A. Willis reached on a fielder's choice that saw the Bobcats get an out at third. Meyer would then lay down a fantastic bunt single to load the bases. Willis would then drive in a run on a single to the shortstop. Another run would score for the Wolves as Simonds would be hit by a pitch in the next at bat.
The Bobcats managed to hold off the Wolves comeback effort, recording the final out of the game in the next at bat to win the game.

The No. 25 ranked Wolves will return home to the Smith Road Complex on Wednesday, March 12th as they host Lander in the final non-conference matchup before entering into SAC play the following weekend.
