Newberry splits doubleheader against No. 19 Lincoln Memorial

Wolves score game-winning run on throwing error by the Railsplitters

NEWBERRY – The Newberry softball team split their doubleheader against No. 19 Lincoln Memorial on Saturday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex.

Newberry moves 22-12 overall and 4-6 in the SAC while the Railsplitters move to 27-7 overall and 5-3 in the SAC.

Game One (Newberry wins 7-6 vs. Lincoln Memorial – 8 innings)
The Wolves would hold off the Railsplitters until the eighth inning where they scored the game-winning run to take the first game of the series.

Lincoln Memorial took a 1-0 lead in the first inning but instantly saw it taken away as Hannah Davis homered to right center, scoring three runs on the dinger.

The Railsplitters would chip away at the lead, scoring runs in the third and fourth innings to tie the game up at 3-3.

From there, the Wolves would break the tie in the fourth inning. The Wolves would load the bases in the inning for Paige Meyer who smacked a hit up the middle of the field to drive in two runs.

Newberry added another run on a solo homerun by Haley Simonds, taking a 6-3 lead in the fifth.

The Wolves would hold on to their lead heading into the seventh inning until the Railsplitters tied the game with three runs of their own.

It took only one at bat for the Wolves to take the victory in extra innings. Morgan Wagaman would be placed at second base to start the inning due to the international tie-breaker rules. From there Ashley Willis would ground out to third base, advancing Wagaman as the Railsplitters recorded the out at first.

Lincoln Memorial then attempted to throw out Wagaman on her move to third, but an errant throw by Railsplitters first baseman ended up advancing Wagaman to the plate for the 7-6 walk-off victory.

Ivy Hayes took the win for the Wolves after pitching one and two thirds innings while giving up only one hit.

Game Two (Newberry falls 7-5 vs. Lincoln Memorial)
Newberry would fall victim to a late rally by the Railsplitters in fifth inning, leading to a 7-5 victory for Lincoln Memorial.

The Wolves started the scoring in the first inning as Paige Meyer reached on an infield single. A walk awarded to Julia Bomhardt put two runners on for Natalie Willis who provided a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners up a base.

Haley Simonds then hit a deep sacrifice fly to right field, easily scoring Meyer from third on the play.

Two doubles from the Railsplitter to start the second would tie the game at 1-1. The score would remain tied until the Wolves put up four runs in the third.

Reagan Glanz began the inning by taking first base on a walk. A triple from Natalie Willis would score Glanz. Simonds would bat next, taking the second walk in the inning for the Wolves before Hannah Davis cleared the bases with a three-run homerun to right center.

Newberry relied on the dominant pitching of Selice Daley, who recorded seven strikeouts on the day, before the Railsplitters used a big fifth inning to take the lead.
Five runs from Lincoln Memorial in the fifth with an added insurance run in the sixth ultimately led to the Wolves' 7-5 defeat.
