Newberry Track and Field earns five first-place finishes at CIU Invitational

Men's team places second overall, women's team finishes sixth overall

COLUMBIA – Newberry's track and field team enjoyed some of the program's best placings as the team competed at the inaugural Columbia International University Invitational event.

The men's team finished second overall out of 16 teams while the women's team placed sixth out of 14 teams.

On the Track:
Elijah Fulmore shined for the Wolves on the track today as he finished in the top three in two separate events. The freshman placed second overall in the 110m hurdles, finishing with a time of 15.83 and followed it up by placing third in the 400m hurdles with a time of 57.62.

James Glenn also earned a spot on the podium in the men's 100m as he finished third with a time of 10.85. The senior also earned a sixth-place finish in the 200m with a time of 21.96.

The men's 4 x 100m relay team of Glenn, Cameron Henderson, Michael Parrish, and Tyrese Grant placed fourth overall with an impressive time of 43.58.

Carlos Hernandez took a seventh-place finish of 4:32.98 in the 1500m while Shelton Reynolds followed slightly behind with a time of 4:34.70 to place 10th


The women's 4 x 100m relay team composed of Jayln Dockery, D'Arion Johnston, Tahleebah Martin, and Elka Variste took gold as the team finished with a time of 48.16.
Martin additionally earned a spot on the podium as she finished third in the women's 400m hurdles with a time of 1:09.56.

Anne Bouwkamp placed third overall in the women's 3000m steeple with a time of 13:57.36.

Tashayna Flinch placed sixth with a time of 1:02.62 in the women's 400m, while Zharia Casteal placed 10th in the same event with a time of 1:12.45. Variste placed sixth in the women's 100m dash as she finished with a time of 12.53.

Johnston was able to secure a team point for the Wolves as she placed ninth in the women's 200m with a time of 26.32.

Diana Gutierrez finished 10th in the women's 1500m event with a time of 6:02.39.

In the Field
Newberry's field performers finished first in four events and had 15 individuals place in the top five of their respective events.

Kayshon Mitchell cruised to a first-place finish in the men's hammer throw as his mark of 40.85 was 10m farther than the second-place finisher.

Isaiah Parker led a gauntlet of Newberry student-athletes in the men's discus as he placed first overall with a mark of 41.03m. Jonathan Huggins earned second with a mark of 36.50m while Antonio Taylor and Kegan Crowell rounded out the top five with marks of 36.14m and 36.06 to place fourth and fifth respectively. Douglas Summers placed seventh with a mark of 34.71m while Treyshawn Miller rounded out the event finishing ninth with a mark of 32.49m.

Parker would once again lead a pack of Wolves, this time in the shot-put event where he earned his second first-place finish of the day with a mark of 13.72m. Taylor finished second in the event with a mark of 12.58m. Malik Morant placed fourth with a mark of 11.69m while Miller took fifth overall with a mark of 11.36m.

Grant placed fourth in the men's long jump with a mark of 6.44m. Elijah Ngugi took sixth in the event with a mark of 6.05m.

Kerron McCrary placed seventh in the men's high jump with a mark of 1.73m.

Iris Duke took home gold in the women's hammer throw with a mark of 44.10m. Octavia Grandy followed with a second-place finish with her mark of 37.80m. Rikaya Williams rounded out the Wolves in the event as she placed seventh with a mark of 30.33m.

Gari Forehand placed seventh in the women's discus with her mark of 32.12m while Williams placed eighth with a mark of 31.99m.

Williams would earn her highest placing in the women's shot put as she took home third overall with a mark of 10.52m. Mya Stevens also placed seventh in the same event with a mark of 9.38m.

Variste took home her second podium finish of the day as she placed third in the women's long jump with a mark of 5.20m.
Johnston earned team points for the Wolves for the third time on the day as she placed third overall in the women's triple jump with a mark of 10.99m.

Up Next:
The Wolves will look ahead to a two-day event in the Wofford Terrier Relays next Friday and Saturday in Spartanburg.
