NEWBERRY – The Newberry men's tennis team fell to No. 5 Wingate 6-1 Wednesday afternoon at the Oakland Tennis Center.
Edison Ambarzumjan was able to get the Wolves (6-7, 0-2 SAC) lone win on the day. Ambarzumjan was able to defeat Daniel Belisto with a 6-4 first set win while edging out Belisto 7-6 in the second set. Belisto is ranked 14th in the country in singles play.
Jose Navarro had a hard-fought match but ultimately falling to Matthew Jones. Ones was able to get the first set, winning 7-5. Navarro was able to get one back in the second set, winning 7-5. Jones was able to come away with a 6-4 win in the third set.
Newberry had many tight sets against the Bulldogs as
Sean Nguyen,
Enrico Haas and
Lawrence Friedland all had their second sets go to 7-5 but fell in their respective matches.
The Wolves will take a brief break and be back in action March 13 as they travel to No. 13 North Georgia for a 3 p.m. start.
