NEWBERRY – Playing in their first doubleheader in over a week, the Newberry softball team kept up their strong play as they split the series with Limestone on Tuesday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex.
The Wolves took the first game by way of a 9-1 win in six-innings, earning the victory by run-rule. Limestone would respond in the second game with an 8-2 win. Newberry moves to 13-3 on the season while the Saints move to 8-2.
Game One (Newberry wins 9-1 vs. Limestone - 6 inn.)
Hannah Davis started the game with a three-RBI triple down the right field line and the Wolves never looked back on the Saints.
Chelsey Cunningham continued to show her power as she added a solo homerun in the third inning. Newberry would add another run in the fifth inning as
McKenzie Barneycastle caught the Limestone fielders off guard with an infield single to the pitcher, scoring a run from third base.
The Saints would answer in the fifth inning as they added their lone run of the game. Newberry would answer the run immediately in the bottom half of the inning as Davis would hit a solo shot to left field.
Newberry would end the game in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four additional runs for the run-rule to take effect. Barneycastle led off the inning with a single up the middle, followed by a bunt single from
Natalie Willis.
Haley Simonds was then hit by a pitch, loading the bases for the Wolves with no outs.
Cunningham would add a run as she hit a sacrifice fly to left field, eventually leading to
Reagan Glanz hitting a two-RBI single to center field to end the game.
Alyssa Ball picked up her sixth win of the season in the game after a stellar performance in the circle.
Game Two (Newberry falls 8-2 vs. Limestone)
The Saints regrouped and defeated the Wolves in the second game of the doubleheader.
Back-to-back homeruns for Limestone in the third put the Wolves at a 4-0 deficit.
After the Saints added another run in the fifth, the Wolves would answer as Barneycastle led off the sixth inning with a triple. Willis would bring Barneycastle to score on a well-executed sacrifice bunt.
Limestone would eventually escape the inning, putting three additional runs on the board in the seventh for an 8-1 lead.
Davis would lead off the seventh with her second homerun of the day to left field. However, the Wolves rally would be cut short as Limestone recorded the final three outs to end the game.
