Box Score BELMONT, N.C. - The Newberry Field Hockey team (13-4,9-3) wrapped up their historic regular season campaign by defeating Belmont Abbey (7-11,6-6) 2-0 on Saturday evening. The Wolves set the record for most wins in program history earlier in the season, now extending that record to thirteen wins.
The Wolves played as a unit throughout the game, jointly moving up the field to find areas of success in the final third. Coach
Hannah Dave's team was able to find offensive rhythm throughout the contest, but could not seem to connect the last piece of the puzzle during the front end of the match.
The Wolves established themselves after a scoreless half, when
Brady Keeler was finally able to bury one of Newberry's 19 shots into the back of the cage. Keeler contributed to the shot count by taking five herself and capitalizing in the 42nd minute. This marked the senior's 30th goal of her career for the Wolves, further extending her goal scoring record.
Newberry exploded in power after the halftime break, scoring two goals on 12 shots. The Wolves furthered their lead in the 52nd minute after utilizing a penalty corner to put them in a better position to score.
Chantel Gauthier took the penalty corner just to come back into play and receive a pass from
Farai Kawonde. Gauthier was able to settle the pass and slot one home to put the game out of reach. Newberry worked hard the last eight minutes of the game, finding a few more opportunities in front of the goal which kept the Knights from attempting a comeback.
The first quarter was crucial for the Wolves as they had the Knights on the back foot for 15 minutes. As the Knights gained more possession time in the second quarter , the Wolves defense held strong by avoiding a goal to sneak in before the half.
Newberry finished the day by edging the Knights in penalty corners five to two.
The Wolves turn their attention to November 8th as they head into the South Atlantic Conference Carolinas Field Hockey Championship as the #2 seed. Newberry will be traveling to Charlotte, N.C. to face Limestone College.
