NEWBERRY - The Newberry women's soccer team take a 1-0 loss at home against Wingate on Saturday evening.
The Wolves were able to hold the Bulldogs scoreless for the first 59 minutes of the match. In the 60th minute, Wingate found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead, which proved to be the game-winner. The Bulldogs were on a corner kick that was crossed to the right side of the net where it was headed on goal. The header took a bounce to the left of Newberry's keeper before rolling into the net.
Wingate clearly dominated Newberry in both possession and shots. The Bulldogs consistently maintained the control of the ball in Wolves territory going side to side. Wingate out shot Newberry 34-5.
The Wolves did have a couple of great chances to score. The first coming on a penalty kick just under five minutes into the match. Red-shirt sophomore
Jacqueline Aldrete was called upon to take the shot. Unfortunately she was not able to capitalize as the keeper made the diving save to the right side.
The second best chance for the Wolves came at the 71st minute. Senior
Taylor Hiatt had possession of the ball around mid-field. She was able to drive down the pitch, beating a few defenders along the way, before taking a shot at the top of the box. The shot was blocked by a Wingate defender which led to a corner kick, but Newberry could not find the back of the net.
The Wolves have the next week off before a match on Saturday Oct. 12 against Lenior-Rhyne at 7:30 p.m.
