NEWBERRY - Two second quarter goals in quick succession powered Newberry to a convincing 3-1 win over visiting Bellarmine Sunday afternoon, further extending the Wolves' school record for wins in a season.
Neither team was able to take control of the first quarter, as both teams traded possession throughout the first 15 minutes. The Wolves (11-4) showed some urgency after being outshot 4-1 and began the second quarter with a spark. Newberry wasted no time getting on the board in the second quarter as
Farai Kawonde flicked a quick pass to
Kristyna Oyola, who took a reverse shot that landed past the Knights (8-7) keeper 58 seconds into the period.Â
Newberry secured a two-goal cushion going into halftime, slipping in two of their seven shots in the second quarter. Midfielder
Chantel Gauthier demonstrated her fast reaction skills as teammate
Brady Keeler took a shot from just inside the circle, leading to Gauthier deflecting the off target shot into the back of the cage in the 28th minute. Keeler and Oyola now lead the team in both goals and assists with at eight a piece.Â
Although both teams took 13 shots on the day, the Wolves were able to make the most of their opportunities when entering the circle. Newberry was able to land nine out of thirteen shots on goal. Oyola and
Haley Smith led the team with three shots, landing two on target and providing Newberry with offensive momentum. Â
Oyola led the way for Wolves, scoring two goals for her second multi-goal game of the season. The forward's eighth goal of the season came in the 42nd minute when Kawonde assisted her teammate for a second time in the match. Kawonde controlled the ball in the circle and sent the ball towards the goal to set Oyola up with a one-time flick into the back of the cage.Â
The Knights avoided the shutout when Lindsay Sturgeon scored off a rebounded shot before Newberry's defense could recover with under 10 minutes to play in the fourth quarter. The Wolves spent no time gathering composure and heading down towards the cage during their next possession. Two late counter attacks led to goal scoring opportunities but the Wolves did not connect a final shot to increase the lead.Â
Newberry honored their eight seniors during today's match, who comprise the winningest senior class in school history with 31 career victories.
The Wolves return to Setzler Field for one final home game against conference-leading Queens on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
