NEWBERRY - The Newberry women's soccer team had some late match heroics to get a 2-1 victory over Mars Hill on Saturday night at Smith Road Complex.
Junior
Emma Harms was able to score the game-winning goal for Newberry in the 70th minute. Newberry had possession deep in Mars Hill near side corner.
Jacqueline Aldrete had control when she played the ball back to Harms. The Greer, S.C. native then curled the ball from 35 yards out to hit the back of the net to give the Wolves a 2-1 lead.
The visiting Lions originally had the lead 20 minutes into the match. Sammantha Pyle chipped a shot over Newberry keeper's head from 17 yards out for the 1-0 lead.
It did not take long for the Wolves to score the equalizer. Exactly two minutes later, senior
Daphne Heyaime was able to find the back of the net. The Santo Domingo native controlled a cross from Aldrete before one touching it past to the keepers left.
The field conditions were not the greatest for either side. The constant rain made it very difficult for either side to play their way. The ball would slow down or completely stop in the middle of the field from all the water on the pitch. Even with these conditions, both sides were able to get off double digit shots, with Newberry leading 21-11 in that category.
The Wolves will stay home to play Converse on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 7:00 p.m.
