Wolves endure tough 3-1 loss to No. 15 Carson-Newman

Hernandez scored her first goal of the season in the loss

NEWBERRY – The Wolves held their own with the No. 15 ranked team in the country, but ultimately fell to the Carson-Newman Eagles 3-1.

While Carson-Newman struck first in the fifth minute of play, the Wolves didn't let up and forced Carson-Newman to only three shots on goal in the first half.

Daphne Heyaime had a breakaway on offense in the 50th minute, forcing a one-on-one with the Carson-Newman goalkeeper, but her shot hit the crossbar and went out of play.

Deisi Hernandez put the Wolves on the board in the 81st minute on a booming shot from 20 yards out. The goal came after Heyaime dribbled around three Carson-Newman defenders and gave the ball off for Hernandez where she took one touch and sent it upper 90.

Despite giving up three goals, goalkeeper Jayleen Gant had an otherwise spectacular day with nine saves, including stopping a penalty shot by the Eagles.

The Wolves move to 3-5 on the season and 0-4 in the SAC.

The Wolves travel to Mars Hill later this week for another conference matchup. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Mars Hill. The match will be broadcast on NewberryWolves.tv and live stats will be available through StatBroadcast. Links for both will be available on the men's soccer schedule page on Newberrywolves.com.
