NEWBERRY- The Newberry men's soccer team fell, 5-3, in a hard-fought match to the visiting Chowan Hawks on Tuesday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex.
After falling down 2-0 due to two penalty kick goals, the Wolves fought back to even the score.
Pedro Gabriel scored his first goal of the season on an assist from
Daniel Reyes in the 27th minute. Reyes stole the ball from a Hawks defender and sent a clean through ball across the goal where Gabriel shot and scored.
Fabrizio Bucco scored an equalizing goal to tie the game in the 49th minute. Bucco, a senior, cleaned up on a ball that bounced around the Chowan box to tie the game at 2-2.
The Hawks pushed their lead back to three after netting goals in 55
th, 61st and 76th minutes.
Daniel Reyes continued his point streak, netting his third goal of the season in the 79th minute that was assisted by
Ibrahim Nadir and
Fabrizio Bucco to draw one back for the Wolves.
Reyes, a junior, has scored or assisted in the past four games and is currently tied with Nadir and Bucco for the most goals on the team this season.
"We dug ourselves a hole again by giving up an early goal." Head coach
Bryce Cooper said following the game. "We have to start growing up quickly and learning from our mistakes and not repeating them. This is a critical moment for this team and I believe they will step up and respond the right way the rest of the season."
The Wolves ended the game with 14 shots and seven corner kicks.
Jacob Williams picked up a career high with 10 saves in the game.
The Wolves return to the pitch on Saturday, September 29th as they travel to Mars Hill to take on the Lions.
