GREENEVILLE, TENN. – After securing their first road win of the season on Wednesday, the Newberry Wolves gutted out a 1-1 2OT draw with Tusculum on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Field. With the tie Newberry moves to 4-5-1 overall and 0-4-1 in SAC play.
Tusculum (5-4-2, 3-2-1 SAC), who is fresh off a victory against #12 Carson-Newman, scored the first goal of the match in the 31st minute to take a 1-0 lead. However, the goal didn't faze the Wolves, as seven minutes later the Wolves responded with a goal of their own on a strike from
Salley Slice.
Slice, a freshman, stole an errant pass from a Pioneer defender from about 30 yards out from the Tusculum goal. The Chapin, S.C. product went upper 90 on a shot taken from the top of the box to even the score at 1-1.
Despite conceding a goal, goalkeeper
Jayleen Gant had an otherwise terrific day. The sophomore recorded 10 saves on the day, tied for the third most in Newberry women's soccer history.
Newberry will have a quick turnaround as they return home to take on Albany State on Monday at 1 p.m. at the Smith Road Complex. The match will be broadcast on NewberryWolves.tv and live stats will be available through StatBroadcast. Links for both will be available on the men's soccer schedule page on Newberrywolves.com.
