Newberry falls short against Lincoln Memorial

Wolves honor seniors Sydney Dempsey, Katelin Morris, and Ragan Hill in their final home game

NEWBERRY – The Newberry women's soccer team fell to Lincoln Memorial by a score of 1-0 on an windy Saturday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex.

The Wolves nearly scored the first goal of the game in the 25th when forward Emma Harms played a nearly perfect shot as she drove towards the goal from the left side. Her shot went past the arms of the Railsplitters goalkeeper and missed the right post by mere inches.

Lincoln Memorial would retaliate from the near miss with a goal of their own in the 27th minute.

The Railsplitters, who finished second in the SAC regular season standings, would be kept at bay by the Wolves the rest of the game. Katelyn Spaid single-handedly kept a second Railsplitters goal off the board when she blocked a shot on goal with her head in the 69th minute. The Wolves also put the Railsplitters offsides on what seemed to be another goal in the 80th minute.

Daphne Heyaime had two close scoring opportunities in the final minutes of the game. In the 87th minute, Heyaime took a shot on goal, but it was saved by the Railsplitters goalkeeper. Heyaime scored what seemed to be an equalizer in the 88th minute, but the goal was called off due to an offsides call.

The Wolves honored seniors Sydney Dempsey, Katelin Morris, and Ragan Hill before the game. Dempsey has played over 1,200 minutes for the team in 42 games, while recording one assist as a forward on the team. Morris has played over 4,000 minutes in 61 games.
