Wolves get late win over Mercy

Bazemore scores first collegiate goal

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The Newberry Wolves (5-5) got off to a good start on their New York road trip, securing a 1-0 victory in the final minutes over the Mercy Mavericks (2-9) on the road.

It was a defensive struggle from the first whistle, with both sides failing to score in the first half. Mercy led Newberry in shot attempts 6-3 before the break, with each side securing three penalty corners each, but neither could capitalize on any of their opportunities with both defensive sides holding tough.

The second half was much of the same, with both the Wolves and the Mavericks finding occasional opportunities, but ultimately coming up just short of finding the back of the goal.

With the game scoreless and just over eight minutes remaining in regulation, the Wolves earned a penalty corner, hoping to find a glimmer of space to put a point on the board. Megan Eisenhardt delivered the corner pass to Chantel Gauthier, who set up near the top of the arc and fired a pass inside.

From the middle of the crowd emerged Gabrielle Bazemore, who collected the pass and sent a quick shot past the goalkeeper, scoring what proved to be the deciding goal and giving the Wolves a 1-0 victory.

The goal was Bazemore's first of her collegiate career, and ascended the Wolves to a thrilling victory, their second in a row. The victory also came due to the spectacular play of senior goalkeeper Allison Davis, who recorded eight saves on Mercy's eight shots on goal, a perfect save percentage, helping the Wolves to their first shutout of the season.

When all was said and done, Newberry led in penalty corners 7-5, and Mercy led in shot attempts 11-7, but it was the Wolves who were able to capitalize and their opportunities and secure the victory.

Head coach Hannah Dave liked her team's effort, giving credit across the board for the victory.

"We came out ready to fight in the first half and had a lot of offensive opportunities," Dave said. "It took us until the second half to capitalize on them but the team kept putting the pressure on. I give props to the entire team and hats off to our keeper for holding it down in cage"

The Wolves are headed to Long Island, N.Y. next to take on the Molloy College Lions tomorrow, October 13. The game will begin at 1:00 pm, and it will be the final road game of the 2018 regular season for Newberry before returning home for seven consecutive home games.
