Newberry edges past Queens University of Charlotte

Wolves have a two-game winning streak

NEWBERRY – A pair of second-half goals and a tremendous play from Allison Davis in goal propelled Newberry to its fourth win of the young season as the Wolves defeated nonconference foe Queens 2-0 at Setzler Field Sunday afternoon.

The contest mimicked Newberry's game against Converse four days ago, entering the half deadlocked. And like Wednesday's contest, a second-half offensive explosion put distance between Newberry and the visitors.

Kristyna OyolaFarai Kawonde, Brady Keeler, and Olivia Fraunfelter each notched a shot for Newberry (4-2) throughout the contest.

In a reverse role, Keeler took on the responsibility of play-making, dishing out assists on both of Newberry's goals. For her second goal of the season, Oyola was able to connect in the 37th minute from right outside of the goal, beating the keeper to get Newberry on the board at 1-0.

Later in the second period, Kawonde was able to score off of a penalty corner to the left bottom of the goal. This notched her second goal of the season as well.

The defense for the Wolves held strong against Queens' 12 shots and eight on goal. The Royals (1-4) also had eight penalty corners in total. Newberry's Davis (2-0) was put to the test by Queens' Kayleigh Lawrence in the 54th minute when she saved Lawrence's penalty stroke.

The Royals had an opportunity to score coming moments before their penalty stroke. However, the goal was disallowed because it wasn't inside the arc and came off a defender's stick.

Newberry will travel to Gaffney to play conference rival Limestone at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23.
