NEWBERRY- The Newberry women's soccer team shutout Coker in their South Atlantic Conference opener, 2-0 on Wednesday night (Sept. 13) at the Coker Athletic Field.
Alyssa Ortega who finished third in the South Atlantic Conference in scoring a season ago led the Wolves with two goals on the night. She has recorded four goals total in the five matches Newberry has competed in. The Wolves (2-3) offense controlled the game out shooting Coker (1-2-1) 32-6, with 18 shots being on frame. Going scoreless in the first half of the contest brought about a second chance opportunity shot from Ortega, who put the Wolves on the board at the 52nd minute.
The Wolves' continued applying pressure, forcing Cokers' goalkeeper Samantha Hoffman to make 16 saves in the contest. But Ortega was not finished as she headed a ball off a free kick just one minute after the previous goal. Deisi Hernandez, Jacqueline Aldrete and Daphne Heyaime combined for 14 of the Wolves' shot attempts, while Ortega record 12.Freshman Jayleen Gant started in her second consecutive game and tallied two saves.
Newberry will head on the road to face Carson-Newman in another conference game on Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m. The Wolves will return to Smith Road Complex on Sept. 20 to face the Indians of Catawba.
