Neumann awards seniors with 2OT win

NEWBERRY - The Newberry College men's soccer team nabbed a 3-2 win in double overtime on Saturday afternoon. Before the game Newberry honored six seniors: Billy Decker, Zachary McCall, Sterling Wendt, Quincy Kroeschell, Davis Bryan, and Gabriel Ward.

Till Neumann recorded his fourth game winning goal in the 106th minute, as he shot past the defense and received a feed from Fabrizio Bucco. The Wolves (4-7-3, 3-5-1 SAC) were on the attack from the start of the contest, with Tobias Henriksen launching a shot from the right of the box.

The Lions' (5-6-2, 4-3-2 SAC) knotted the game at one in the 34th minute via a penalty kick by Jordan Lennon.

Off yet another penalty kick, Mars Hill captured the lead of the game just nine minutes in the second half. The Lions' lack of defense allowed Neumann to drive and make a clean pass to Bucco to even the slate. Newberry's staunch defensive effort would leave Mars Hill only mustering one shot in the first overtime period.

Neumann now ranks in the top 10 in the South Atlantic Conference in three statistical categories: goals (10), shots (60) and points (21). The Wolves held a 20-18 advantage in shots, but were slightly edged in shots on goal 11-17. Neumann recorded five shots on the game. Claus Lehland tallied four shots, with three being on frame. Dixon recorded nine saves on the afternoon.

The Wolves travel to Erskine for a non-conference match up on Oct. 25, before finishing off the regular season at Lenoir-Rhyne on the Oct. 28.
