Gauthier notches first career goal in loss to Converse

Newberry returns home to Setzler Field on Oct. 13 to take on Belmont Abbey at 7 p.m.

SPARTANBURG – Newberry and Converse took tonight's matchup into the final minutes of regulation firing on all cylinders offensively with the Wolves eventually falling 4-3.

The Wolves (5-8, 2-6) were looking to repeat the victory seen on Wednesday, Sept. 23 when they first faced the Valkyries (2-10) with a win of 4-2. However, things looked a little different tonight as the two teams headed into halftime with Converse leading 2-1.

Brady Keeler and Chantel Gauthier were the primary beneficiaries of a Wolves offense determined to score. Keeler struck first in the 15th minute to get Newberry on the board. She worked her way through various defenders to the back of the goal.

Coming out of halftime, Keeler was able to find the back of the goal for a second time in the 43th minute to tie the game at 2-2. These two scores propelled her to nine goals on the season.

Four minutes after Keeler's second score, Gauthier saw her first career of the season collected from a rebound.  This goal edged Newberry past Converse at 3-2.

Converse was able to tie the game up in the 55th minute via a penalty corner and inevitably sealed the deal in the 67th minute.

The Wolves didn't back down in the waning moments of the game obtaining three penalty corners set up by Kristyna Oyola.

Newberry will return home to face their conference foe in Belmont Abbey on Friday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.
