Box Score MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The Newberry College women’s soccer team (0-1) spent a lot of time on the defensive end as the Georgia College Bobcats (2-0) had a majority of the possession early on in Sunday’s contest en route to a 2-0 win. The Bobcats finished 7-4 in a tough Peach Belt Conference last season.
After a couple great saves by Newberry goalkeeper Kodi Jean Johnson, the Bobcats sent one into the back of the net in the first half with just under five minutes to play. Anya Mancinelli scored her first goal of the season for Georgia College off an assist by Sarah Miller.
Johnson came up big on multiple one on one opportunities that were presented to her, where she made sliding saves near both wings.
Newberry was outshot 21-3 in the contest as Johnson had eight saves for the Wolves. In the second half, freshman Madison Putnam received her first action as goalkeeper for Newberry and recorded six saves.
Minutes into the second half, Newberry had two excellent opportunities to tie the game. Erika Linch (Sr.) blew past the Bobcats defense, but didn’t get all the power on the shot she wanted as it landed right into the lap of Bobcat goalkeeper. Just over a minute later, Morgan Powers (Jr.) sent a rocket from the right wing, but it was straight at Ashlee Graham.
The Bobcats scored their second goal from Rahliat Animashaun who put the ball past Putnam with 28:05 left to play.
Newberry will have their first home game of the season on Wednesday against Francis Marion. Live stats will be provided at newberrystats.com
