Box Score NEWBERRY – Alyssa Ortega’s header in the 86th minute gave Newberry (3-6) their third win of the year in a 1-0 victory against non-conference opponent Emmanuel (1-7-1).
A lead pass from teammate Erika Linch gave Ortgea room to run behind the Lion defense. The Emmanuel goalkeeper, Hannah Welch, attempted to cut off the lead pass as she charged towards the top corner of the box. But the redshirt-junior popped a header right over Welch for her sixth goal of the season. Ortega tallied seven shots in the match, two of which were on frame.
Welch and Newberry’s Madison Putnam had eight saves each for their respective teams, in a game which brought a ton of shots from both sides. The final shot tally was 30-14 in favor of the Wolves. It was Putnam’s first shutout, and her first win on the season.
Morgan Powers added six shots for Newberry, two of which were on net. Linch, who added an assist on the Ortega goal, finished the match with five shots.
Stephanie Lamm tested the Newberry defense all afternoon as she led the way for the Lions’ recording eight of the 14 shots for Emmanuel. Four of her eight shots were on goal.
Newberry will play another conference opponent in Tusculum on Sunday, Oct. 2nd as the Wolves' play against a SAC team in seven of their final eight games. On Thursday, the Wolves travel to Belmont Abbey to finish off a suspended game from Sept. 1st. Newberry trailed 1-0 at halftime before inclement weather postponed the match.
