Box Score NEWBERRY - The Wolves (1-5, 0-2 SAC) battled against 2015 SAC Champion Carson-Newman (5-1, 1-0 SAC) in a 4-1 loss on Saturday afternoon. After a goal by the Eagles on a deflection that already had Newberry goalkeeper Madison Putnam leaning the opposite way, Carson-Newman added two more goals less than four minutes later.
Lauren Wade and Julianne Herrity added the third and fourth goals for the Eagles, after well set up passes by teammates Averi Williams, and Holly Talbut-Smith.
Williams struck first for the Eagles in the 12th minute on a header, after the freshman goalkeeper, Putnam, batted away the ball on a free kick, but it went straight to Williams. Putnam ended the match with five saves for the Wolves.
With six minutes remaining in the first half, a long ball played wide to Alyssa Ortega found her behind the Eagles goalkeeper as she put in a shot from the far left side of the box to tie the game at one. It was Ortega’s second goal of the season.
Ortega added another shot on frame in the match, as teammates Morgan Powers and Lindsay Huber also added two shots in the game for the Wolves.
It was just the second conference game of the year for Newberry, who will turn right around and play against conference opponent Coker on Wednesday Sept. 21 at Smith Road complex, at 4:00 p.m.
