Box Score

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Newberry Wolves (7-9-1, 4-5-1) have extended their road winning streak to two games after their 5-1 win in Saturday afternoon’s match vs. Mars Hill (5-9-1, 3-7).

Junior Rachelle Serrano picked a good time to get her first goal of the season, as she gave the Wolves a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute, shortly after a Newberry corner kick.

Less than three minutes later senior Erika Linch, who had two goals and two assists in a win vs. Brevard on Wednesday, connected for her eighth goal of the year on an assist from Liz Gutierrez.

Linch then notched her second goal of the contest in the 83rd minute. All four of the shots taken from the California native registered on goal. Her nine goals on the season are good for a 3rd place tie in the South Atlantic Conference.

Just before half, Morgan Powers followed in the footsteps of Serrano, notching her first goal of the season in the 43rd minute. Notably, it was Serrano who assisted Powers on the play to give Newberry a 3-0 halftime lead.

Newberry recorded 20 shots on the afternoon, nine of which were on frame.

In the 56th minute Aleonya Hunter struck to bring the Lions within two, but thanks to the Wolves’ defense who only allowed three shots in the match, Newberry goalkeeper Korina Martinez was tested very little. Martinez finished the match with one save, moving to 4-1 on the season.

Alyssa Ortega, who scored three goals on Wednesday, led the team lead with five shots. Marissa Reyna and Liz Gutierrez added three shots apiece for the Wolves. Morgan Powers and Rachelle Serrano each recorded two shots.

Ortega registered a goal in the 89th minute for her 15th goal on the campaign. That ties her for the school record for goals in a season, set by Michelle Calmeyn just last season. The 15 goals from the California native put her in a tie for 1st in the South Atlantic Conference.

Newberry will face Lenoir-Rhyne for Senior Day, next Saturday Oct. 29, at Smith Road Complex. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
