Box Score NEWBERRY – Alyssa Ortega recorded the second hat trick of the season for Newberry (5-8-1) in a 3-0 win vs. non-conference opponent Bob Jones (8-5).
The last hat trick for Newberry was recorded by Erika Linch in a 6-0 win vs. Francis Marion.
Ortega notched her first goal in the 10th minute after finding herself in a one-on-one scenario, beating Bob Jones goalkeeper Kristen Haertlein. Haertlein finished the game with 14 saves, holding strong against a Wolves’ offense who were relentless all afternoon.
Ortega finished the match with eight shots, and stayed efficient as seven of which were on goal.
Morgan Powers assisted Ortega on her second goal of the match, tallying her second straight game with an assist.
The junior from Venice, California sent home the hat trick in the 66th minute moving up the right side of the box and getting behind the Bob Jones defense. It was her 11th goal of the season.
The Wolves’ dominated possession in the attacking third on Thursday afternoon outshooting the Bruins 36-3. Newberry’s 36 shots rank number 10 all-time in the program.
Linch was credited with seven shots in the match. Lindsay Huber, who scored her first goal of the season vs. LMU on Monday, finished with five shots. Marissa Reyna and Morgan Powers ripped off four shots apiece. Sydney Dempsey also chipped in three shots for Newberry.
KodiJean Johnson recorded the win for Newberry notching a lone save in the victory. Johnson went relatively untested as the Newberry defense held strong and gave the Bruins few opportunites.
The Wolves’ will now hit a three game road trip as they travel to Queens this Saturday. Kickoff is slated for 5:00 p.m.
