Hat trick from Linch helps Newberry earn its first season win

HARTSVILLE, S.C.- The Newberry College women’s soccer team defeated Coker College, 4-2, on Wednesday afternoon. The win against the Cobras is the Wolves’ first win of the season.

Two minutes into the game, Newberry got on the board first from Erika Linch sinking the ball into the back of the net. Linch took a header off a cross by Elizabeth Gutierrez from outside the box. Linch then scored the second goal of the game just nine minutes later from the top of the box.

Newberry held the lead (2-0) through the rest of the first half.  The Wolves outshot the Cobras, 9-2, with five of their shots on goal.

The Cobras tied the score at, 2-2, with 27 minutes left in the game. Renee Ledesma scored the first goal for Coker at the 53 minute mark before Anna Vig scored at the 62 mark.

Newberry took back the lead with 10 minutes left in the game. Michelle Calmeyn put the ball in the back of the net by beating a defender at the top of the box. Linch then secured the win with her third goal of the game (off a corner) four minutes before end time.

For the game, Newberry outshot Coker, 23-8, with 13 of the shots on goal. Alexis Carrillo made three saves in goal for Newberry.

Head Coach Deedee Sanguinetti shared her thoughts about the win. "We have been hunting for this and I am very proud of the squad for finally coming together and capitalizing on our chances. We still have out moments where we show our youth but it was a win we worked very hard for."

The Wolves are back home on Saturday, September 26 for a 1:30 p.m. game against Wingate.
