Wolves defeated by Carson-Newman under the lights

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.- The Newberry College men’s soccer team fell to Carson-Newman University, 3-1, Saturday night.

Carson-Newman got an early lead five minutes into the game when Marius Staably scored the first goal. Newberry scored 26 minutes into the first half when Ky Tyler put the ball in the back of the net. The assist of the goal was given to both Davis Bryan and Lucas Ferreira.

Six minutes later, the Eagles responded by taking the lead (2-1) with Thibault Mathorez heading in a free kick from Bruno Andrade.

Leaving the first half, the Wolves took one shot compared to Carson-Newman's ten. Brad Dixon made one save in the net for Newberry.

The score was kept at 2-1 in the second half until Staalby scored his second, team's third goal of the game to later give them the win. Newberry was tough on offense getting eight shots off. Bryan took five shots while Jalin ButlerCammy Provan, and Bennett Murphy all took one shot a piece.

For the game, Newberry took nine shots on goal while Dixon made five total saves in goal.

Head Coach Barry Slagle shared some post game thoughts, "I am proud of the effort and control that the team put forth tonight against a dangerous Carson-Newman team. We created some quality chances in the second half and took a step forward. We will be looking to continue this growth next week versus Coker."

Newberry travels to Coker College on Wednesday, September 23rd to play at 7 p.m.
