JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.- The Newberry College women’s soccer team dropped to Carson-Newman University, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon.

Going into the game, Head Coach DeeDee Sanguinetti, was very positive.  "My squad is proving to be young and battling chemistry on the field.  Our results have proven so, reflecting the loss of 8 starters is a great mountain to climb, the way a team plays as a whole determines its success,” coach said.

The game was scoreless until the 26th minute where Gabrielle Gianeselli scored the first goal of the game for Carson-Newman.

Going into the second half, the Eagles held the lead at, 1-0. For the half, Newberry took five shots and just one corner. Alexis Carrillo made two shots in goal for the Wolves.

Just four minutes into the second half, Julianne Herrity scored Carson-Newman’s second goal.

At the 57 minute mark, Michelle Calmeyn scored for Newberry to cut the lead to, 2-1. Calmeyn latched onto a misplayed ball by Carson-Newman and put it into the back of the net. Four minutes later, Newberry tied the game off a header from Michelle Calmeyn. Sara Silvestro took a corner kick to place the ball right to Calmeyn.

With 17 minutes left in the game, Herrity scored off a cross kicked by Elissa Lane for the, 3-2, lead and win.

For the game, Carrillo made nine saves in goal and the team took 11 total shots.

After the game, Coach Sanguinetti shared her thoughts, “We battled back hard and had moments of brilliance but there are times we lose focus and teams are capitalizing on us. We have some fine tuning to do and I believe we will find it.”

The Wolves travel to Coker College on Wednesday, September 23 for a 4:30 p.m. game.
