Box Score NEWBERRY- The Newberry College women’s soccer team dropped their home opener against Catawba, 1-0, on Wednesday afternoon.
Throughout the first half the score was tied at 0-0. The Indians outshot Newberry, 6-4. Sara Silvestro, Michelle Calmeyn, and Erika Linch all took one shot apiece. Alexis Carrillo made three saves in goal for the Wolves.
Newberry was more active on offense during the second half taking 17 shots, with ten being on goal. Linch took eight shots with four being on goal while Elizabeth Gutierrez got four shots off. Calmeyn took two shots while Silvestro, Alyssa Ortega, and Bailey Ellis all took one apiece. While the effort was great, none of the shots made it to the back of the net.
At the 84th minute in the second half, Catawba took the lead with Emily Davis putting the ball in the net after a free kick taken by Becky Frost.
For the game, Newberry outshot Catawba, 21-10. Newberry took 12 shots on goal compared to the Indians’ six. Carrillo made five total saves in goal for the game.
The Wolves are back on the road on Saturday, September 19 to play Carson-Newman. The game will start at 5 p.m.
