SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. – The Newberry College women’s golf team sits at the top of the leaderboard after the first round of the 2015 South Atlantic Conference Championship Tournament at the par-72, 5,859-yard Sevierville Golf Club - River Course on Sunday afternoon.
The Wolves put together a solid total team score of 310 to take over first place on the 11 team leaderboard. Wingate is just behind Newberry at 316 while Carson-Newman trails the Bulldogs by just one stroke.
The 42nd ranked Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters posted a 320 while Queens rounded out the top five with a 322.
Freshman Karly Mims (Lexington, S.C.) carded a new career low round of 74 on the day to sit tied for first after the opening round. She is tied with Queens’ Grace Glaze while the pair lead Wingate’s Megan Taylor by a single stroke to complete the top three in the individual ranks.
Mims birdied two holes to overcome a double-bogey in the first round, shooting 1-over par in the first nine holes. She matched her front nine score on the back with another 1-over, sinking two more birdies to bring her total to four for the day.
Marianna Monaco (Yonkers, N.Y.) avoided disaster in the first round to shoot a 4-over par 76 and is tied for fourth. The sophomore got the round off to a rocky start with a double-bogey and two bogeys in the first three holes. She pared the next three holes but went bogey, birdie and bogey to finish the front half of the course, respectively, at 5-over.
However, she was able to minimize the damage with an eagle on the 10th hole, the only eagle of the day in the tournament.
Then, after back-to-back bogeys on holes 12 and 13, she birdied two of the final four holes in the round to compile a 1-under for back nine and arrive at her total score of 4-over.
Eline Askeland (Oslo, Norway) began her final SAC Tournament appearance with a 5-over par 77, tying her lowest score of the season she posted in the second round of the Smokey Mountain Intercollegiate back in the fall. She goes into Monday’s second round in sole possession of sixth place.
Korey Coleman (Stanford, Ky.) is also competing in her last SAC Tournament and is tied for 25th after shooting an 83 while Annabelle Dallery (Sumter, S.C.) is tied for 52nd heading into the second day.
Newberry and Wingate tied on the first day with nine birdies each but Monaco’s eagle gave the Wolves the overall advantage with 10 under-par holes.
Out of the 10 players who scored below 80, Newberry and Wingate both had three while Carson-Newman and Lincoln Memorial each had a pair.
“The golf course played tough toady as the conditions changed, causing the greens to get fast and firmer,” Newberry head coach, and 2015 SAC Coach of the Year, Clarissa Childs said. “The girls did a good job of adjusting to the conditions and staying in the game. We have put ourselves in a good position for the next two days, but there is still a lot of golf left to play.”
The three-day, 54-hole event continues Monday with 18 more holes. Newberry will tee off from 9:20 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. with 10 minute intervals and are paired up with Wingate and Carson-Newman.
Dallery will be off first at 9:20 a.m. followed by Coleman at 9:30 a.m. and Askeland at 9:40 a.m. Monaco will tee off at 9:50 a.m. followed immediately by the leader Mims at 10:00 a.m.
