Newberry finishes fifth while Monaco ties for seventh at Agnes McAmis Memorial

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – High winds and fast greens made for a rough final day of the Agnes McAmis Memorial at the par-72, 5,805-yard Links Hill Country Club on Tuesday afternoon, as only 19 players were able to break under 80 in the final 18-holes. 

The Newberry College women’s golf team was able to weather storm and shoot a 323 for the second straight round to finish the tournament with a 646 and haul in their fifth top-five finish on the year.

Lander came away with the hardware as the Bearcats posted a total score of 627 after totaling the lowest score of the second round with a 307. King (633), Carson-Newman (637), USC Beaufort (643) and Newberry made up the top-five while Wingate (648), Catawba (651), Lincoln Memorial (652), Converse (655) and Tusculum (662) rounded out the top 10 slots in the 18-team event.

Lander’s Mariana Martins took home the individual medalists honors with a 7-over par 151. Caitlin Starrs of Wingate tied Martins with a 151 but lost in the playoff hole to finish second. Lander’s Sophie Stone (152), King’s Elizabeth Swallow (153), Converse’s Maddisen Cox (155) and Lincoln Memorial’s Lindsay Davis (155) finished out the top five in the individual ranks.

Marianna Monaco (Yonkers, N.Y.) made a run at the top five slots as she finished tied for seventh with a 156 total score (76 and 80), just five strokes behind the leader. The sophomore recorded her fifth top-10 finish in the eight tournaments so far in 2014-15.

Karly Mims (Lexington, S.C.) posted straight 80s to tie for 18th with a 160 while Eline Askeland (Oslo, Norway) dropped four strokes from Monday’s round to finish 26th with a 162 (83 and 79).

Korey Coleman (Stanford, Ky.) shot a pair of 84s and was tied for 43rd with a 168 in the 96 player field while Annabelle Dallery (Sumter, S.C.) rounded out the scoring after dropping four strokes to an 85 on Tuesday to card a 174.

Mariam Colon (Toluca, Mexico) competed as an individual in the event, finishing with a 173 in the two rounds in her first tournament for the Newberry Wolves.

The Agnes McAmis Memorial wraps up the regular season for the Wolves as they will next compete in the South Atlantic Conference Championship Tournament at The Sevierville Golf Club in Sevierville, Tenn., on April 12-14.
