CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Newberry College women’s golf team brought home more hardware at the conclusion of the Wingate Intercollegiate Invitational on Tuesday afternoon.
The Wolves dropped seven strokes from Monday’s round to finish tied for second with a team score of 635. Newberry now has five, top-five finishes for the season, including a first place finish at the Etowah Intercollegiate in the fall.
Newberry tied with Converse and both teams trailed champion Limestone by 10 strokes. UNC Pembroke and USC Beaufort each posted 637s to round out the top five while King (638), Queens Univ. of Charlotte (650), Lincoln Memorial (656), Carson-Newman (658) and host Wingate (666) rounded out the top 10.
Freshman Karly Mims (Lexington, S.C.) carded her career low 36-hole score with a 154 two-day score after shooting a 78 in Tuesday’s round to finish fourth in the individual standings, just four strokes behind winner Maddisen Cox of Converse. This marks the first top five finish for Mims in her freshman campaign and shaves off two strokes on her career low 36-hole score. She was also named to the All-Tournament Team along with Cox, Hannah Luckett (Limestone), Elizabeth Swallow (King) and Kadi Pallastrone (Queens).
Korey Coleman (Stanford, Ky.) dropped four strokes from Monday’s 82 to post a 78 and total 160 for the tournament to finish tied for 17th, her third top 20 finish of the year.
Marianna Monaco (Yonkers, N.Y.) tallied a 161 during the two days with an 81 and an 80 to finish tied for 20th, her sixth top 20 finish of the season.
Eline Askeland (Oslo, Norway) improved eight strokes from day one to record a 164 (86 and 78) for the tournament, putting her tied for 30th. The 78 is her lowest round since the second round of the Smokey Mountain Intercollegiate, the first tournament of the year.
Rounding out the scoring was Annabelle Dallery (Sumter, S.C.) who shot 82 and 84 in the two day span to compile a 166 for the two-day event. She finished the weekend tied for 40th with only six strokes separating her from the top 20 in the close knit playing field.
Newberry will next be in action at the Agnes McAmis Memorial Women’s Golf Invitational at the Link Hills Country Club in Greeneville, Tenn., on Monday and Tuesday, March 30-31.
