Wolves in 13th after first round of Armstrong Women's Invitational

POOLER, Ga. – The Newberry College women’s golf team sits in 13th place after the first round of the Armstrong Pirate Women’s Invitational at the Savannah Quarters Country Club in Pooler, Ga.

The Wolves posted a team score of 318 on the day to put them 29 strokes back of leader Nova Southeastern who turned in a 289 team score, just 1-over par. Flagler (295), Florida Southern (298), Florida Tech (298) and West Florida (302) round out the top five and only 10 strokes separate Newberry from seventh place.

Nova Southeastern’s Daniela Ortiz and Florida Tech’s Felicia Leftinger lead the tournament individually as they each shot three under on the day to finish with scores of 69 each.

In the 85 player field, 50 posted scores better than 80 with 20 coming in under the 75 mark and the top five players shooting par or better.

Senior Korey Coleman (Stanford, Ky.) led the way for the Wolves as she carded a 77 in her first round, the second 77 score of the year for her to place her tied for 31st going into Tuesday’s final round.

Freshman Karly Mims (Lexington, S.C.) shot a 77 for the day to sit tied for 38th for tomorrow’s final 18. This is the second time she has shot 77 in her short career which is the second lowest score she has posted, outside of her 75 in the first round of the Patsy Rendleman Invitational.

Sophomore Marianna Monaco (Yonkers, N.Y.) suffered a tough day as she scored an 8-over par 80 on the day to tie her for 50th place. This is only the second round of the season that Monaco has shot an 18-hole score of 80 and only the third time in 12 rounds that she has gone over a 78.

Senior Eline Askeland (Oslo, Norway) turned in a score of 83 for the first round of the tournament and currently sits in 62nd place.

Sophomore Annabelle Dallery (Sumter, S.C.) rounded out the Newberry scoring with an 89 in just her sixth round this season.

The Wolves will tee it up for the final round of the tournament tomorrow morning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start with Newberry players teeing off on holes 13-15 of the course. Coleman will go off of the 13th tee while Mims and Monaco with both start at 14. Askeland and Dallery will both start off at number 15.
