Box Score ROCK HILL- The Newberry College women’s soccer team dropped to Wingate University 1-0 on Tuesday afternoon. The game was the South Atlantic Conference Championship Quarterfinals match.
Wingate got on the board at the 3:34 mark off a penalty kick from Kaitlyn Brunworth for a 1-0 lead.
Michelle Calmeyn took the first shot for Newberry six minutes after the goal but it went wide. Rachelle Serrano followed with a shot on goal nine minutes into the game. At the 23:08 mark Morgan Powers took the third shot for the Wolves and it went wide. Erika Linch looked for the back of the net hitting a ball off her head with 12 minutes left in the first half.
Going into the second half Wingate kept the 1-0 lead to later take the win. Serrano hit a header 13 minutes into the second half but it went high. At the 72:25 mark, Calmeyn looked to tie the game by hitting a header but it went wide. Elizabeth Gutierrez took one of the final shots on goal at 84:39 but Alexis Jones made the save for Wingate. Five minutes later Gutierrez took the last shot for Newberry sending it wide.
For the game, Newberry took nine shots with four on goal while Rebecca Darley made one save in goal. The Wolves ended their season 5-10-2 overall and 4-7-0 in the conference.
