Box Score HICKORY, N.C.- The Newberry College men’s soccer team dropped to Lenoir-Rhyne 4-0, on Saturday afternoon. The game was the Wolves last match of the season.
Newberry got its first shot off at the 5:01 mark with Sterling Wendt hitting the ball wide right.
The Bears got on the board nine minutes into the game by a goal from Raffaele Di Puorto. DiPuorto found the lower left corner off a pass from Daniel Williams.
Nico Vallejos looked for the back of the net but it was blocked by a Bears defender. Wendt and Davis Bryan took back to back shots and both were saved by Bears goalie, Zach King.
Lenoir-Rhyne extended their lead (2-0) 21 minutes later with a goal from Ben Meredith. Ismael Noumansana dished the pass for the assist.
With four minutes left in the half, Eric Elder scored the Bears third and final goal for the half. Elder found the lower right corner from five yards out.
For the half, Newberry took eight shots with four on goal while Brad Dixon made four saves in goal.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Noumansana scored the fourth and final goal for the Bears.
The Wolves took seven shots during the second half but nothing met the back of the net. At 63:43, Provan shot high before Vallejos fired a shot that was saved by Bears goalie. Vallejos took another shot but it was blocked followed by a shot from Mike McPeak who shot wide left.
Tyler Lee took the final two shots for Newberry with 10 minutes left. Lee shot high before shooting on goal to give the goalie a save.
For the game, Newberry took 15 shots while Vallejos and Wendt led the team with three apiece. Dixon made five saves in goal before Gabe Ward made two saves.
For the regular season, Newberry finished 3-14 overall and 0-11 in the South Atlantic Conference.
