Wolves drop last regular season game to Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY, N.C.- The Newberry College women’s soccer team dropped to Lenoir-Rhyne 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.  The game was the Wolves last regular season game.

The score was set at 0-0 through the whole first half. Newberry didn’t get a shot off until 19 minutes in when Guadalupe Magana shot wide right. Elizabeth Gutierrez took a shot on goal five minutes later but it was saved by the keeper. At the 27:39 mark Magana took another shot but it was blocked by a Bears defender.

Newberry didn’t get another shot off until the 43:23 mark when Morgan Powers looked for the back of the goal but it was saved by the Bears goalie.

Newberry took five shots with two on goal while Rebecca Darley made five saves in goal for the half.

The Bears got on the board first six minutes into the second half. Garcelle Alequine took a shot from the top of the box pushing it through the hands of Alexis Carrillo.

Lenoir-Rhyne extended their lead (2-0) at the 62:06 mark with a goal from Kendall Smith. Smith finished the ball through the lower left corner.

After the two goals Newberry took its first shot of the second half. Michelle Calmeyn took a shot but it was blocked by a defender. Calmeyn then took a header shortly after but it was saved by the goalie.

Six minutes later, Gutierrez took a shot but it was saved by the Bears goalie. Magana took Newberry’s last two shots within four minutes of each other. The first one (84:05) was blocked before the opposing goalie saved the second one.

While Newberry took five shots in the second half, the Wolves couldn’t find the back of the net.

For the game, Newberry took 10 shots while Magana led the team with four. Darley made five saves in goal before Carrillo made eight saves.

For the regular season, Newberry finished 5-9-2 overall and 4-7-0 in the South Atlantic Conference.  The Wolves will travel to play Wingate in the SAC Women's Soccer Championship quarterfinals on Tuesday, November 3 at 5 p.m.
