Box Score NEWBERRY- The Newberry College women’s soccer team received their third win of the year by defeating USC Aiken, 2-0, on Wednesday afternoon.
The Pacers took five shots before the Wolves got their first shot off at the 20th minute. Michelle Calmeyn looked for the goal but it went wide right. Less than a minute later, Morgan Powers took a shot but it went high.
Just less than 30 minutes into the game, Calmeyn scored her ninth goal of the season putting Newberry on the board first. Elizabeth Gutierrez crossed the ball from the left side finding Calmeyn from 10 yards out. Three minutes later Calmeyn extended Newberry’s lead to 2-0 off a deflection from Guadalupe Magana’s pass.
Newberry held the lead (2-0) going into the second half. For the half, Rebecca Darley made three saves in goal. Calmeyn led the team in shots with five and shots on goal with four.
Play was quiet in the second half with no goals scored. Newberry was still heavy on offense but nothing got into the back of the net. A little over a minute into the half Calmeyn took a shot but it was saved by the Pacers’ goalie. Newberry didn’t get another shot off until the 59:53 mark where Lindsay Huber attemoted to place a header in the goal but it went wide right.
Ragan Hill followed with a shot two minutes after but it was blocked. Less than a minute after Hill’s shot Calmeyn struck the ball high before Magana hit wide right. Sydney Dempsey got her first shot off in the game at the 68:14 mark but it also went wide right. Calmeyn and Powers ended the game by both shooting the ball wide right within just a minute of each other.
For the game, Newberry outshot USC Aiken, 18-10. Darley ended the game by making three saves in goal and Calmeyn led the team in shots with nine.
The Wolves are home again on Saturday, October 17 against Queens. The game will be their Breast Cancer Awareness game and will start at 12:30 p.m.
