Newberry falls in home opener, 13-1

NEWBERRY – The Newberry College field hockey team dropped its home opener against Bloomsburg University Sunday morning, 13-1, at Setzler Field.

After a close first six minutes, Bloomsburg got on the board first as Felecia Domenici scored her first goal of the season. Newberry had multiple chances just minutes following the goal but could not capitalize. Following a save by Newberry goalie Dakota Elzy, Bloomsburg’s Whitney Kowski converted on a close range tap-in to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead. 

Kowski scored her second of the day less than three minutes later to give Bloomsburg a 3-0 advantage. The Huskies added four more goals to conclude the half with a 7-0 lead. 

In the second half, following three Bloomsburg goals, Newberry sophomore Kaitlyn Willard scored her first and team’s first goal of the season to put the Wolves on the board, trailing 10-1.

Bloomsburg added three more goals to take a 13-1 lead, one they held onto for the rest of the match.

Newberry College field hockey travels to play Sweet Briar on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
