Newberry drops season opener to Limestone

GAFFNEY – The Newberry College field hockey team dropped its opening contest of the 2014 campaign at Limestone, 5-0.

Newberry (0-1, 0-1 Eastern College Athletic Conference) trailed 1-0 in the first two minutes of the game, as Rachel Goromonzi netted her first goal of the season giving Limestone the lead. The Wolves kept the game close until the 13 minute mark when Stembeni Zhanda scored the second goal for Limestone (1-0, 1-0 ECAC). Just 59 seconds after Zhanda’s goal, she assisted on Jill Funkhouser’s goal, giving the Saints a 3-0 lead.

Goromonzi scored her second of the match at the 28 minute mark giving the Saints a 4-0 lead going into halftime. She completed her hat-trick eight minutes into the second half putting the Saints up 5-0.  Four minutes later, Meghan Smiga recorded the first shot of the match for Newberry.

The Wolves finished the match with five shots all coming in the second half, led by sophomore Courtlyn Warren who recorded three shots. Sophomore transfer goalkeeper Mary Greco finished with six saves on 10shots in the first half. Greco’s freshman counterpart Dakota Elzy entered in the second half and finished with four saves with only one goal against.

Newberry’s next match is Sunday, September 7, at 11 a.m. against the No. 6 Bloomsburg Huskies at Setzler Field.

- The match was the first conference contest in the existence of the new ECAC Division II Field Hockey conference. 
- Newberry's next conference match is on Sept. 21 at home against Bellarmine.
