Newberry drops contest to Mercyhurst 6-3

NEWBERRY – Sophomore midfielder Caitlyn Warren added a goal to bring her season total to seven in Newberry College’s 6-3 loss to the Mercyhurst Lakers on Saturday afternoon at Setzler Field.

The Wolves (3-6, 0-2) fell behind in the early going as Marissa Faso scored for the Lakers at the 4:47 mark in the first half to give Mercyhurst a 1-0 lead. Faso gave her squad a 2-0 advantage three minutes later scoring her second of the match. The Lakers added their third goal 32 seconds after as Cayla Slade slotted it past Newberry goalie Mary Greco.

10 minutes later at 18:21 Warren tallied her seventh of the season off of an assist from Kaitlyn Willard by way of a penalty corner to pull the Wolves within two at 3-1.

The Lakers extended the lead back to three as Slade added her second of the match with 10 minutes left in the half. Six minutes into the second half, Mercyhurst received another goal to have a 5-1 lead.

Newberry did not go away as they found two goals three minutes apart to get within two.  At the 47:02 mark, freshman Tori Morris scored her second of the season off of an assist by Meghan Smiga. Three minutes later Smiga scored third on the year finding the back of the cage off of an assist by Willard.

The Scarlet and Gray failed to gain any closer as the Lakers added its sixth goal with under ten minutes to play to regain its three-goal lead at 6-3.

Warren’s goal today brings her into a three-way tie for the team lead at seven goals along with Willard and junior Kaycie Andrew.

Newberry returns to action on October 4 as they play host to Dowling at noon, to conclude its five-game home stand.
