Defense dominates and Wolves win at Brevard 2-0

Box Score

NEWBERRY – The Newberry Wolves women’s soccer team (4-1-1, 2-1-0) picked up a SAC win on the road on Wednesday night as they topped Brevard 2-0.

The Wolves got goals from a pair of senior leaders as Gabrielle Brodie (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand) and Brayden Miller (Lyman, S.C.) found the back of the net.

Newberry dominated possession in the game and outshot the Tornadoes 19-7 and held a vast edge in shots on goal as the Wolves put nine shots on target to Brevard’s one.

Brodie got into the scorebook first as she received a ball from junior midfielder Guadalupe Magana (Santa Paula, Calif.) and beat the keeper to the back post 24:27 into the game. It was her first goal of the season for the All-SAC selection.

Newberry doubled the lead just before halftime at the 39:39 mark as Miller got her second goal of the season on a Rachael Jonas (Camarillo, Calif.) assist as she also beat the keeper to the back post.

Newberry ended the half with a 14-2 edge in total shots thanks to a stout defensive effort that prevented Brevard from taking their first shot until 34:05 into the game. Junior goalkeeper Alexis Carrillo was only called into action to make one save and that came almost halfway into the second half with 26:52 left to play.

The Wolves also dominated the corner kick count as they won that battle 11-1. Jocelyn Springer made 7 saves for the Tornadoes and the foul count was 8-5 in favor of Brevard.

Newberry will return to action in a SAC game at Catawba on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
