Wolves Drop Home SAC Opener 1-0

Box Score

NEWBERRY – The Newberry women’s soccer (4-0-1, 1-1) team dropped their home SAC opener to Lincoln Memorial (3-2-0, 1-1) 1-0 at the Smith Road Complex on Saturday.

The Wolves statistically dominated the game and also dominated possession of the match as they outshot the visitors from Hickory 19-4.

Junior midfielder Guadalupe Magana (Santa Paula, Calif.) led the way with four shots followed by senior Gabby Brodie (Rolleston, New Zealand) and senior Sarah Sager (Saugus, Calif.) who each posted three shots.

Michelle Hunter scored the only goal of the game for the Railsplitters 25:44 into the game after she was played into the box by Kadie Soall and she finished a one on one situation into the far netting.

The best chances for the Wolves came just after the midway point of the second half at the 69:10 mark as sophomore Jessica Will (Leesville, S.C.) was played into the box and despite having an extremely difficult angle, lifted her shot over the keeper but it bounced off the far post and back into play.

Newberry had two other close calls with one at the 75:28 mark as Brodie had an almost identical run to Will and fired a shot at the top corner from close range only to be denied on a save by Lincoln Memorial goalkeeper Kayla Stephens.

The last chance for the Wolves came with just under 11 minutes remaining in the game as Magana dummied the ball to herself at the top of the box to beat the defender and took a rip only to have it pushed away by Stephens.

Despite their late efforts, the Wolves were unable to come away with a goal and recorded their first loss on the season.

The Wolves will play at Brevard on Sept. 24th.
