Box Score NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves' field hockey team picked up the first home win in program history with a 5-2 victory over the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins at Setzler Field on Saturday.
Newberry moves to 2-4 overall on the season entering Sunday's ECAC match against Bellarmine. That game is set to start at noon.
The Wolves held the majority of the offensive play throughout the match and scored the game's first four goals.
Kaitlyn Willard scored the first two goals of the day, putting in one from close range in the seventh minute and scoring on the penalty stroke in the 12th minute.
In the 13th minute, Meghan Smiga scored her first goal of the season on a tap-in assist from Willard. Smiga pushed the Wolves' lead to 4-0 on a breakaway goal from Willard in the 26th minute.
VWC got on the board in the 31st minute, making it a 4-1 Newberry lead at halftime. The Marlins cut the lead to 4-2 in the 51st minute, but Newberry put the cap on the historic home win with a Kaycie Andrew tap-in goal in the 61st minute.
Mary Greco played all 70 minutes in goal, making four saves. Willard had two goals and two assists, while Caitlyn Warren assisted on the Andrew goal.
