Jonas delivers in OT as Wolves top USC Aiken

Box Score

AIKEN – The Newberry Wolves women’s soccer team stayed unbeaten with a 2-1 OT win on Wednesday at USC Aiken.

Senior midfielder Rachael Jonas broke the 1-1 deadlock 8:09 into the first overtime on a corner kick that was delivered in by junior Guadalupe Magana (Santa Paula, Calif.) and she put it in from the middle of the 18-yard box.

The Wolves opened the scoring when senior midfielder Sarah Sager (Saugus, Calif.) scored unassisted just before the end of the first half at the 43:14 mark.

USC Aiken pulled the game into a deadlock after the Pacers Hannah Allison scored on a header from a free kick near the corner flag. The game remained tied 1-1 for the rest of regulation despite each team’s efforts to put one in.

Junior goalkeeper Alexis Carrillo (La Puente, Calif.) made seven saves between the posts and bumped her overall season record to 2-0-1.

The Wolves turned up the heat on the Pacers in overtime posting the only shots of the overtime period with four and it was only a matter of time before one of them found the back of the net.

USC Aiken held an 11-10 shot average including a slight 8-7 edge in shots on goal but held an 11-6 advantage during regulation.

The Wolves will take the field again on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. for Newberry College’s Family Weekend as they play host to Lincoln Memorial as part of a men’s and women’s double header.
