Box Score GAFFNEY – The Newberry College field hockey team concluded its second season in program history on Sunday afternoon in an 8-1 loss to the Lindenwood Lions at Saints Field in the ECAC consolation match.
In the first half, the Lions struck quickly as ECAC Rookie of the Year Greta Banholzer’s from the penalty corner deflected and found Ashton Lichvar who slotted it past Newberry goalie Dakota Elzy.
The Wolves held strong under the pressure from Lindenwood but at the 11:57 mark, Graycen Dave found the back of the cage to put her side up 2-0.
Two minutes later the Lions scoring continued as Davie found Tara Robben who slotted the ball past a sliding Elzy to put Lindenwood on top 3-0.
Wolves struck in the 21st minute as Kaitlyn Willard’s penalty corner was stopped by Katie Thompson who slung the ball across the circle to Courtlyn Warren who then sent a laser shot into the bottom left of the cage.
Two minutes later Megan Pranger received a rebound off of a diving Elzy and put away the shot to give the Lions a 4-1 lead. The Lions added two more goals in the half to have a 6-1 halftime lead.
The second half remained scoreless until the 65th minute mark when Victoria Buysschaert added the seventh goal of the game. The Lions added another goal late in the match to finish the match with an 8-1 victory.
Newberry tallied 13 shots in the match including 10 on target. Mary Greco saw second half action for the Wolves in relief of Elzy. Lindsey Patton entered late into the game for Newberry and had a couple of opportunities for the Wolves.
Following the championship match, the all-tournament team was announced which included Newberry's Thompson and Co. Warren who each recorded one goal on the weekend.
