Newberry drops semifinal match to Limestone, 4-1

GAFFNEY – Newberry field hockey fell in their consolation match on Friday evening to the No. 1 seeded Limestone Saints, 4-1.

The Wolves recorded five shots with three being on target in the match. Tara Nevitt led the way with two shots for the Scarlet and Gray.

The Saints struck first at the 2:50 mark when Nicolle Grant scored as she intercepted a pass from the Wolves defense and buried her shot from the top of the circle.

Newberry fended off multiple attempts by the Saints before Allyson Meyer received a pass from Jill Funkhouser who slotted it in to give Limestone a 2-0 lead.

In the 38th minute Rachel Goromonzi scored her 19th goal on the season burying a shot past Newberry goalie Dakota Elzy and give the Saints a 3-0 lead.

Katie Thompson broke the drought for Newberry as she received a pass from Kaitlyn Willard’s corner and floated her shot over the goalkeeper for Limestone.

Funkhouser tallied a goal to lift the Saints to a 4-1 lead.

Newberry will face the Lindenwood Lions on Sunday afternoon in the consolation game at 12 p.m. from Saints Field in Gaffney, S.C.
