Wolves dismiss Trojans

Box Score

NEWBERRY – The Newberry Wolves women’s soccer team will stay atop the SAC standings after beating Anderson 1-0 at home on Wednesday afternoon.

Senior Sabrina Serafin (Northridge, Calif.) scored the game’s only goal early and the Wolves defense again prevented the Trojans from bringing themselves back into the game.

Only 10:10 into the game, the Wolves played a ball into the box that bounced around after a failed attempt to clear the ball and it fell to the foot of Serafin. She took one touch to settle it and then fired a shot into the top corner leaving the keeper no chance.

Despite it being the only goal of the game, Newberry had numerous opportunities to extend their lead. In the second half at the 68:20 mark Rachael Jonas (Camarillo, Calif.) had a direct free kick from about 30 yards out and she hit a rope that clanged off the crossbar and back into play.

Later with just over ten minutes left, senior Casey Wesley (Saugus, Calif.) took a through ball to the outside of the box down the sideline and played a ball in that skipped all the way through the face of the goal before Serafin got a shot off that went wide left.

The Wolves dominated the stat sheet as they outshot Anderson 16-4 for the game and held a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. Newberry’s defense that has held opponents to the 22nd fewest shots on the season in the country again locked down and the Trojans got off four shots total with only two of them requiring junior Alexis Carrillo (La Puente, Calif.) to make a play on the ball.

Newberry will be back in action at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday against Carson-Newman for the first game of the doubleheader “Pink Game.”
