Box Score NEWBERRY– Newberry Wolves field hockey concluded their five-game home stand with a 3-1 victory over the Golden Lions of Dowling College on Saturday afternoon at Setzler Field.
Sophomore forward Kaitlyn Willard scored her eighth and ninth goals of the season to lead the Scarlet and Gray in the win.
Following a scoreless first half, Newberry (4-6, 0-2) broke the deadlock at the 48:30 mark. After gaining possession near midfield, Meghan Smiga charged down the right side, passing defenders and found Willard in front of the cage for the tap-in goal.
Less than two minutes later following a scramble in front of the cage Smiga received a kind roll and buried the second goal of the match for the Wolves, her fourth of the season.
However Dowling’s Melissa Fuerst put the Golden Lions on the board in the 62nd minute to trim the Wolves lead at 2-1.
After back and forth action, Newberry sealed the victory as Willard scored her second goal of the match with 52 seconds remaining.
The Wolves upped the tempo in the second half outshooting the Golden Lions 11-4, en route to a 17-7 shot advantage.
Newberry hits the road for the first time in a month as they travel to play Centre College on October 10 at 4 p.m.
